What Makes Great Teaching?

This is the big question we have been working towards, but after completing this course I can finally say I have the answer. Great teaching is the ability to bring awareness, equity, diversity, etc. into a classroom setting. Making sure all parties have a voice and it is heard and greatly valued. Setting out a positive yet motivating impression on your students' learning and perception of the world. For this week’s assignment, we picked our top 5 assignment strategies that we have completed over this semester.

My top 5 were:

1.    3-Minute Pause

2.    Do’s and Don’t List

3.    Social Media

4.    Blogging with Other Educators

5.    One Pager

I decided to pick these five assignments because I personally gained so much from them and found them the most beneficial/empowering, especially for students. The 3 Minute Pause strategy can be empowering by challenging students to dig deep and truly express how those sources either reshaped their thinking or expanded it into a better light. The Do’s and Don’t List activity worked for me because I was able to make a list and categorize them by do’s and don’ts, therefore when the list is complete I can go back and reflect on why each item is under each list and see the benefits or drawbacks of each idea.

Social Media is empowering because the social media platforms of this generation hold people accountable for not being equal to all skin tones and often help educate the uneducated in a simple but still powerful way. Blogging with other educators worked for me because I got to read others’ points of view on topics, that we both learned. We all shared similar claims but often differ in some areas, so that was interesting yet useful to read and understand. One pager can be empowering because the outcome is solely up to the students to decide. They have a nice range of ideas to choose from and they’ll typically pick what they feel is their strength, therefore the work will truly display what they learned and gained from the lesson.

  1. Hi Madyson! I love the 5 options you chose for this assignment, I also chose a few similar ones! I also really enjoyed the do’s and don'ts list and I think this is a great one to use with our future students. Often times we may just look at a concept from the “do” perspective which I think is why having the don'ts category as well makes this such a good strategy. As you said, getting to see not only the benefits of one idea but also the drawbacks of another can be very beneficial for helping students visualize a concept. I also enjoyed blogging because as you mentioned, it is a great way to educate and get educated from others. This was a great post!

    1. Hi Emily! I'm glad you enjoyed my post and we were shared similar view points. Yes, i think often times educators forget to observe and get students to point of the "don'ts" or drawbacks. I'm a strong believe that students can teach teachers, because their work tells us so much about how they think and obtain information we put out.

  2. Hi Madyson! I really enjoyed reading about your top 5 strategies. I as well chose the blogging with other educators for one my top 5 strategies. I feel like this strategy is a good way in we are exposed to other students thoughts, point of views and perspective. When talking about equity and jusitce its important for students to be exposed to more perspective aside from theirs becuase it is a very heavy topic and they should be open minded when thinking about it. Although I didnt choose the One pager for mine I do believe that it is very empowering for students when it comes to equity and justice. I feel like this such a an open strategy but once done it reflects many things. With this strategy a teacher is really able to see the students thoughts. On another topic, which strategy do you think was the most benefical for you as a student?

    1. Hi Mariela! I'm glad you enjoyed reading my blog this week. Yes, communicating with other teachers in the same field as you is really important, because it turns into a community and everyone can help each other or even take away from each other too. Discussing those topics of equity and justice will forever be difficult for students to digest but it's also very important for us to help make learning that information interesting yet important to where it sticks with them. The 3-Minute Pause or One pager was probably my most beneficial strategy because it required a lot of thinking.

  3. Hi Madyson! I really enjoyed reading your post and I really love the strategies that you chose to focus on for this semester! I love how you want to make sure all voices are heard and that all parties have an equal opportunity. I love how you felt that the strategies were beneficial for you, but could be even more beneficial for a student. I think that is very telling of how amazing of a teacher that you will be in the future. I agree with you that blogging with other educators was very beneficial as we could see the view points of other people. One question that I want to leave for you is which strategy will be the best fit for your future students?

    1. Hi Channing! I really loved that you enjoyed my blog this week. After learning about kids within the margins, i want to make sure all parties have an equal and fair chance to speak up and express how they truly feel. Rather if people agree or disagree because that's just how society works. For my future students i think the One Pager would be great, because it's wild range. Students aren't just stuck with one option, so i feel that would help me and my students. Because i will see how their little minds works and they'll be able to fully express themselves.

  4. Hi Madyson! I enjoyed reading your blog and reading about your favorite strategies this semester. I also put blogging with other educators on my list. I would have to agree and say that blogging was a great opportunity to share your thought and look at other people point of views. Since everyone differed in their ideas and thoughts. I think it is a great opportunity to learn from others. One pager was not on my list but I do think it is a great effective strategy because I remember doing one pagers all the time in middle/high school. I do think it is effective because it is basically all up to the students to write or draw about what they want to, it gives them creative freedom. I think your choices are great and effective for your future classroom!

  5. Hi Alexs! I'm glad you loved my blog this week and we were able to make a connection due to similar thinking. In the future, i plan to show case how learning doesn't always have to be hard and dreadful but it's very rewarding and useful. I know for me personally back in elementary my teachers would always incorporate songs, games, fun theme days, etc into the lessons and that really worked for the class and stuck with me. So i want to bring that back, because if it stuck with me it will with many others. Yes i do plan to share with my students on my pov of teaching and why i love it, because when students know you care a positive classroom will be born.

  6. Hi Madyson, to start off you did a great job on your last blog of the semester. One thing I noticed in your blog was your top five list because we have some of the same strategies on our top 5 list. I really liked your last paragraph about the empowerment of social media and the strong power it has over our society. I also agree with you and how blogger with our peers helps us bounce different ideas off of each other. Personally, this semester I really enjoyed blogging and getting to hear different people’s opinions about the topics in this course. All of these different strategies that we used over the semester really helped find a better understanding as well. I like how each week we got to use a different task. overall, you did a great job at explaining why you chose the strategies you did. Great job on your blog!

  7. Hi Madyson, first of all, loved your last post!! I would also have to agree, one of my favorite assignments from the semester was the 3 minute pause. I like it because it gave me time to reflect and have my own opinion! I also really did enjoy blogging, I loved getting to write my own or have to read others and respond to them . I definitely think that there are a lot of thing we did this semester that I will be using in the future. The one pager was not on my list but I do think it is a great tool that will work for some people.

  8. Hi Madyson! We had very similar Top 5 Lists! I loved the 3 Minute Pause and the One Pager too! The 3 Minute Pause gave me the opportunity to process all of the information and write down all of my thoughts similar to a 5 Minute quick write assignment. I loved the One Pager because it allowed me to write down the connections I made from the article without having to try to reach an extensive word count. I loved how you explained the Do's and Don'ts List! It's such a good idea to use the list to come back to a reflect. I didn't put blogging with other educators on my list but it is a great opportunity to interact and learn from other teachers as well. This is great for sharing ideas and experiences to learn from and take advice from.
