How Does Gender Affect the Teaching Profession?

Gender has a huge effect on the teaching profession, in my opinion. You don’t see many males within the profession in the younger years of schooling. After many news stories and cases, many male teachers just stick to coaching and try to stay away from the classroom setting. The point of view of a teacher is so cliché, because I don’t think one gender is better than another and all genders are capable of being great teachers without being viewed as inappropriate towards their students because they care more than others within their workspace.
Out of all my years of attending public school pre-k – 12th grade, I can count on one hand how many male teachers I’ve had. When I did have a male teacher, it was usually for electives or sports, rarely core subjects. I didn’t start to get male teachers in core subjects until college. Looking back on it I realized that male teachers usually gravitate toward male students rather than both genders. I understand why male and female teachers behave differently, but if a female teacher can be loving towards all students and not get viewed in a negative way but in a motherly way. Why can’t male teachers be viewed in a fatherly way?

In high school, we have a football coach that everyone loved, and he was viewed highly as a father figure. I think he did a good job breaking the male-teacher barrier but also keeping everything appropriate.

Dr. Seuss once quoted, “Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained, and delighted.. Therefore if all teachers no matter their gender has good and positive intentions toward their students, teacher shouldn’t have to lessen their care/heart.❤
